Hundreds of speeding motorists were caught in Devon and Cornwall on the first day of a campaign to reduce the number of motorcyclists being killed on the region's roads.

Seven police enforcement vehicles, including speed detection units and marked police vehicles, operated across more than 20 sites in Devon, Plymouth and East Cornwall last weekend.

Almost 300 speeding offences were recorded, including 41 people on motorcycles. A number of other road traffic offences are also being investigated.

The Hall for Cornwall and Plymouth Theatre Royal have each secured £240,000 Arts Council funding in the latest round of grant handouts.

They were among 22 successful applicants in the South West receiving a share of £3.8 million to support the arts.

Plymouth Arts Centre receives £168,000 while Music Zone in the city gets £150,000 and £130,000 goes to Exeter-based Spacex, a public-funded contemporary arts space. Cyprus Well, the literature development agency for the South West, receives £120,000.

A "once in a lifetime" Olympic Torch tourism boost could pump an extra £7 million into the Cornish economy in a few days and have an impact lasting many years to come.

According to industry leaders, the Olympic Flame relay starting in Cornwall and showcasing the county to the world will have an impact "beyond value".

Lady Cobham, chairman of VisitEngland, said it was a golden opportunity.

"Over the next 48 hours, the eyes of the world will absolutely be on Cornwall.

"It is an iconic moment for the world and it is a wonderful moment for Cornwall."

A former cricketer who was crucial in helping England to win the Ashes is now working as a checkout operator at a supermarket.

Ashes-winning England star Chris Old now works in the newspaper and magazine section of Sainsbury's in Truro, Cornwall.

The former bowler was part of the legendary team that won the Ashes in 1981.

Ben Ainslie was crowned world Finn champion for the sixth time in Falmouth on Friday after racing was abandoned on on the final day of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Finn Gold Cup because of a lack of wind.
